Travis Bazzana is doing something that very few first-year players ever actually do. He is living up to the hype.
The Cleveland Guardians second baseman has been one of the best stories in the American League since his debut on April 28th, and the people who follow this team closely are running out of ways to explain how good he has been. Now a former Cleveland pitcher is weighing in.
Jensen Lewis, who pitched for Cleveland from 2007 to 2010 shared what separates Bazzana from the average top prospect making his first impression at the major league level.
“He has shown a patience early in his career for a top prospect. That’s a huge boost for this lineup,” Lewis said.

Through 27 games and 96 at-bats in 2026, Bazzana is slashing .302 with a .407 on-base percentage and an .865 OPS. He has drawn 15 walks against 19 strikeouts, has stolen 7 bases, and is already sitting at 1.0 WAR. The on-base percentage is the number that jumps off the page, and it is the direct result of the patience Lewis is describing. A .407 OBP from a 23-year-old in his first month of big league baseball is not normal. It is exceptional.
Bazzana opened 2026 at Triple-A Columbus after the organization decided he needed more developmental time before being handed a big league roster spot. He made his debut in late April and did not immediately set the world on fire, working through an early slump before finding his footing in a significant way. The patience Lewis highlighted was present even during those difficult early at-bats, which is part of what makes the current stretch so meaningful. He was not pressing. He was grinding, staying within his approach, and waiting for the results to catch up to the process.
They have caught up in a significant way.
The conversation around Bazzana has already shifted from whether he belongs to whether he could be an AL Rookie of the Year candidate and, further down the road, an MVP caliber player. That is a remarkable evolution for a player who was not even on the Opening Day roster two months ago.
