The Cleveland Guardians, who are currently sharing the top spot of the AL Central with the Detroit Tigers, will start a new series against the Athletics on Friday. They will do so with a brand-new outfielder on their roster.
On Thursday, the Guardians sent down struggling outfielder George Valera, giving him a chance to reset in Columbus for a while. He is talented enough to put himself on the map again, but he wasn’t playing well, and the team needs productive players.
The team waited until Friday afternoon to announce the corresponding move, taking some time to analyze the available options. Nolan Jones and Stuart Fairchild are both playing very well in Triple-A, but neither is on the 40-man roster, and that would have required a move that Cleveland probably wasn’t prepared to make.
Instead, they chose the speedy Petey Halpin to get a bench role in the majors. The team announced the move in its social media accounts.

Halpin beat out other candidates to get the promotion, including Khalil Watson, Jones, Fairchild, and even CJ Kayfus.
Halpin is a lefty-hitting outfielder who already had a cup of coffee in the majors last year, getting eight plate appearances and hitting .333 in the process. In 2025, he had a 95 wRC+ in Columbus.
Before getting the call on Friday, Halpin was hitting .250/.328/.375 with an 88 wRC+ in 26 games in Triple-A. He had scored 19 runs, hit two homers, and stolen nine bases to this point.
Halpin is not the blue-chip prospect that needs to play every day because you don’t want to stunt his development. He is probably a finished product by now.
He is a speedy player who could contribute as a late pinch-running option, and also as a defensive replacement if needed. He can cover all outfield spots, and that includes center field.
The Guardians have been using Angel Martinez, Steven Kwan, Chase DeLauter, and Daniel Schneemann in the outfield, but all of them deserve to play every day for different reasons. Halpin, therefore, is coming up to fulfill a very specific role. And he could be an asset for Cleveland if used correctly.
In the end, calling up Halpin made the most sense for Cleveland.
