The Cleveland Guardians need to replace outfielder George Valera, who was sent to the minor leagues on Thursday in a rather expected move. He had been struggling to put together good at-bats, and his 46 wRC+ was well below the league average of 100.
There has been a lot of talk in the last few hours about who should get the call to the majors. The Guardians, at least, have several options.
The four favorites to get the nod are Petey Halpin, Khalil Watson, Nolan Jones, and Stuart Fairchild. Each one of them brings a different skill set to contribute to Cleveland this weekend against the Athletics, and possibly beyond.
Guardians Prospective believes Halpin would be the best call in this particular situation.
“Why I think the Cleveland Guardians’ upcoming move to replace George Valera will be Petey Halpin and why it makes sense. Halpin fits perfectly as a late-game pinch runner and defensive replacement that can handle all three outfield positions. He is an above-average fielder at all three spots and has a very strong and accurate arm, leading the farm system with 19 outfield assists in 2025,” he explained on X.

With the emergence of Angel Martinez and his improvement vs RHP he has earned a starting job in either LF or CF.
Coming into the season the hope was to have…

The need for a righty-hitting outfielder such as Fairchild might not be as big now as it was at the beginning of the season, mainly because of Angel Martinez’s rise. The switch-hitter is blossoming into an above-average offensive contributor.
The Guardians do need a fast runner who knows how to run the bases, and Halpin is that guy. He has nine stolen bases in Triple-A this year and has yet to be caught stealing. He could be an asset as a pinch-running specialist late in games, where his defense and strong arm could also play as a defensive replacement.
Halpin’s speed, defense, and throwing arm translate perfectly to a late-inning role, according to the insider. Oh, and he is currently on the 40-man roster, which definitely helps matters.
“I think Halpin’s role will be exactly what I’ve laid out and won’t be viewed as a starter but as more of a weapon later in games. He should see a few starts here and there, but the current outfield of Martinez/Kwan/DeLauter is fully entrenched as starters. A Halpin move makes a ton of sense with how the roster is currently constructed,” he said.
Halpin is a solid prospect, but he is not a blue-chip guy who needs everyday at-bats either in the minors or the majors. His 88 wRC+ in Columbus wasn’t all that impressive, but he posted a 157 mark last year at the MLB level in a tiny sample and finished at 95 in over 500 plate appearances in Triple-A.
He is who he is: a 90-100 wRC+ hitter with speed, good defense, and a strong arm. That’s probably not good enough to start for the current Guardians, but that doesn’t mean he can’t be useful.
