There aren’t many compliments left that Jose Ramirez hasn’t already received during his career.
But this one might rank near the top.
During a recent appearance on MLB Network, Cleveland Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said that Ramirez is the smartest player he’s ever been around.
“This guy plays baseball the RIGHT way… he probably has the highest baseball IQ I’ve ever been around,” Vogt said.

That’s not casual praise.
That’s coming from someone who has spent years around elite players — both as a former major leaguer and now as a manager. For Vogt to single Ramirez out in that way says everything about how he’s viewed inside the organization.
Ramirez’s physical tools are obvious. The power. The speed. The ability to impact a game on both sides of the ball. But what often gets overlooked is the mental side of his game.
He rarely makes mental mistakes. He anticipates plays before they happen. He knows when to take the extra base and when to pull back. He understands how pitchers are attacking him and adjusts in real time.
That’s baseball IQ.
It’s also leadership.
You can see it in the way younger players watch him. You can see it in how often he’s positioned correctly. You can see it in the way he competes every single at-bat, no matter the score.
Ramirez doesn’t just produce numbers. He influences games.
That’s likely what Vogt was referencing. There are plenty of talented players in today’s game, but very few combine instincts, preparation, and feel the way Ramirez does.
It also reinforces why Cleveland has been so determined to build around him. When your best player is also your smartest player — and your hardest worker — it sets the standard for everyone else.
Guardians fans have known for years that Ramirez is special.
Now their manager is putting it into words.
Playing the game the “right way” may sound old school, but in Ramirez’s case, it feels completely accurate. And if Vogt truly believes he has the highest baseball IQ he’s ever been around, that might be one of the strongest endorsements you can give a superstar.
