Shortstop Angel Genao committed a key error in the second inning of Wednesday’s game, and the Cleveland Guardians ended up losing 11-0 at Progressive Field as the Toronto Blue Jays tied the series. The two squads will play the finale on Thursday afternoon. The loss snaps a two-game winning streak.
The defeat wasn’t exclusively Genao’s fault, though, as the offense was limited to just six hits in a home game. To be completely fair, it’s hard to blame them, as they had to face leading AL Cy Young candidate Dylan Cease.

The Guardians are now 70-69 on the season, still trying to put themselves in a good position to secure a spot in the postseason. They can’t afford to lose many more games.
Joey Cantillo allowed nine runs in 5.1 innings, but only four of them were earned. He surrendered nine hits and walked two, with six strikeouts.
Toronto went ahead in the first inning, as Brett Bateman crossed home on Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s RBI double against Cantillo. The game would get out of hand in the second, though.
With the bases loaded and two outs, Cantillo got George Springer to hit a grounder to shortstop that looked like the third out of the inning. Genao, however, threw the ball over the second baseman even though he had a much clearer out at first base, and the error forced in two runs as Toronto took a 3-0 lead.

The next hitter, Guerrero, belted a three-run homer that gave the Blue Jays a healthy 6-0 lead. It’s crazy how much an error can affect the outcome of a game.
In the third inning, former Guardians Myles Straw doubled and brought Ernie Clement home to make it a 7-0 ballgame. Springer hit another RBI double in the sixth, plating Straw with Toronto’s eighth run, and Guerrero’s RBI single made things 9-0 in the same frame.
Josh Smith hit a solo homer off Carlos Hernandez in the top of the eighth, and Nathan Lukes drove in Sean Keys with Toronto’s 11th run against Austin Hedges.
Chase DeLauter racked up three hits, including a double, and Patrick Bailey had two. Besides David Fry hitting a single as a pinch-hitter in the ninth, down 11 runs, no one else did anything on offense.
The Guardians will send Tanner Bibee to the mound for the finale on Thursday. He will face Jose Soriano.
