The Cleveland Guardians haven’t made a lot of moves in the early stages of the offseason. That’s usually the way they operate.
They will most likely make just a couple of minor transactions and wait for the big dominoes to fall before digging deep into the trade market. Also, they won’t spend that much money in free agency.
With that in mind, Justin Lada of Locked on Guardians tried to figure out the best and most feasible targets for this team. In the latest edition of his show, he identified former Houston Astros outfielder Jake Meyers as an interesting fit for this team:
“Jake Meyers is an interesting fit. He doesn’t really do a ton of things the Guardians really do like offensively. He doesn’t chase, he doesn’t whiff, he does square the ball up a little bit, but he’s a good runner, and he’s got really good outfield defense. He still hit 13 home runs two years ago, which would be one of the better numbers in the Guardians in quite some time. As a fourth outfielder or platoon guy, being younger, I don’t think it would cost a ton to get. This is another Logan Allen-type trade to the Astros I would be interested in. Definitely want to trade for Jake Meyers because that will work out fantastic,” Lada said.
The Guardians already have some left-handed hitters in the outfield. Even if Steven Kwan is traded – which hopefully won’t be the case – they also have two promising rookies in Chase DeLauter and George Valera. Adding Meyers to the mix would give them a right-handed hitter with some upside.
While not a superstar, he’s the type of pickup this team usually makes. He shouldn’t demand a long-term deal or a big salary, and the Guardians can certainly roll the dice on him.
Also, he’s not that old. This team has always favored younger players, and he fits their timeline.
The Guardians shocked the world with a strong second half of the season to come back from a historic 15.5-game deficit to win the AL Central division. That’s to say that they’re not that far behind from being a legitimate World Series contender, and it’ll be all about getting the right pieces this offseason.
