The Cleveland Guardians finally called up one of their top prospects.
C.J. Kayfus was starring in the minors, so it was about time fans got to see him in the majors.
Kayfus hit the ground running with an RBI groundout in his first plate appearance.
Then, he had to wait until his eighth at-bat to finally record his first MLB hit, a double.
Nevertheless, as promising as he is, no player is perfect, and he’s not the exception to that rule.
Bernie Pleskoff of Forbes recently pointed out Kayfus’ biggest weakness.
“Kayfus does not fit the usual Guardians profile of a consistent, high content hitter. There is some strikeout in his game, and scouts have always raised concerns about Kayfus’ high strikeout rate. In fact, this year he has whiffed 93 times, while accepting 44 walks. If he can be selective at the plate, Kayfus could provide the Guardians with a budding, emerging, sorely needed home run hitting bat in their lineup,” Pleskoff wrote.
Kayfus dominated in Double-A and Triple-A, but his strikeout rate was always a concern.
Then again, he can give the Guardians the type of slugger they’ve been craving for a while.
He has power, and he can do well against both lefties and righties.
Primarily a first baseman, he also has experience playing left field and right field, so he should address a major area of need.
Of course, he will struggle at times, and it will take some time to make the adjustment to Major League Baseball.
But if he’s a little more selective at the plate and doesn’t chase pitches out of the strike zone as often as he’s done so far, he has all the tools to become an impact player for years to come.
