Travis Bazzana made history as the first native of Australia to be the No. 1 pick in the MLB Draft. After earning that honor in 2024, it was expected that he would make his major league debut soon afterward.
It took a little longer than some people may have liked or expected, but that day will finally arrive if Bazzana takes the field against the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday. After being promoted from Triple-A, the second baseman could become the Guardians’ leadoff hitter as they continue to search for an offensive boost.
According to Luke Potosky, Bazzana’s debut will make history in multiple ways, as his Australian background is very rare for Major League Baseball and the Cleveland franchise.
“By my count, Travis Bazzana will become: 39th player raised in Australia to make MLB debut; 36th Australian-born player to make MLB debut, dating back to Joe Quinn in 1898; 2nd Australian to debut for Cleveland (Cameron Cairncross, 2000),” Potosky wrote on X.

Cairncross was a pitcher who was signed out of the Australian Baseball League by Cleveland in 1998. He was originally signed by the San Diego Padres, but after arm surgery, he returned home before coming back to the United States.
The right-hander made his MLB debut on July 20, 2000, a promotion that kept him from representing Australia in the 2000 Sydney Olympics, and he went on to pitch 15 games for Cleveland that season, his only one in the major leagues. Cairncross had shoulder surgery and missed the entire 2001 season, then was released, ending his career.
The Guardians are expecting much, much more from Bazzana, who had his minor league career limited by a series of oblique injuries last season. He was in line to make the 2026 Opening Day roster out of spring training, but after spending time playing for Australia in the World Baseball Classic during camp, he began the season with Columbus.
His performance there was becoming too good to ignore much longer, especially with Juan Brito struggling after his first promotion and Gabriel Arias still on the injured list. Bazzana was hitting .287/.422/.511 with two home runs, 10 RBIs, and eight stolen bases in 24 Triple-A games.
As one of the top hitting prospects in the sport, he will be counted on to give the Guardians’ lineup more production now and well into the future.
