The Cleveland Guardians decided to assign top second base prospect Travis Bazzana to Double-A Akron.
It was a rather aggressive assignment for the former No. 1 draft pick, considering his .238 batting average and 25.4 percent strikeout rate last year in High-A, but it shows that the Guardians’ faith in him is considerable.
If they think he can succeed in the high minors right away, they must have their reasons.
In two games with the RubberDucks, Bazzana is proving them right.
In his first game of the season on Friday, he went 2-for-3 with two walks, a run, an RBI, and two stolen bases.
He showcased his excellent speed.
On Saturday, it was all about his power:
“Travis Bazzana’s first Double-A homer is a 2-run bomb!” GuardsInsider posted on X with the video of the blast.

At the moment of writing this piece, with the game underway, Bazzana was 3-for-4 with the homer, a single, a double, three runs scored, and two RBI.
He was enjoying an even better game than his opening act, which is saying a lot.
He is hitting a cool .714 with a humble 2.064 OPS.
That’s coming down, of course, but the most important takeaway is that Bazzana doesn’t seem fazed by the level jump.
Quite the contrary, in fact: he seems eager to prove himself against the top pitchers in the minor leagues.
Bazzana has a chance of reaching Cleveland before the end of the season, but that will depend entirely on his evolution as a hitter and as a fielder at the keystone.
So far, so good in Double-A.
