The Cleveland Guardians are banking on young impact bats such as George Valera, CJ Kayfus, and Chase DeLauter to take another step forward in 2026 and solidify themselves as foundational members of what was a lackluster lineup in 2025. This farm system is finally starting to produce some much-needed thump, and top prospect Travis Bazzana is coming soon as well to hopefully give the team a reliable middle infield stud for the next decade.
Bazzana’s hype is continuing to build and his debut could come sometime in 2026, especially if he keeps raking like he did earlier in the week when he crushed a three-run homer against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The former first overall pick is a big reason for the excitement heading into this upcoming season, and he is now drawing comparisons to another former Guardians All-Star.
In a recent article for Cleveland.com, the Cleveland Baseball Talk Podcast had strong praise for Bazzana. They went so far as to compare him to former Cleveland All-Star second baseman Jason Kipnis.
“On defense, questions linger about his lateral range at second base. Hoynes offered a comparison that will resonate with longtime Cleveland fans: Bazzana’s build and competitive wiring remind him of former fan-favorite Jason Kipnis — a player whose range was occasionally questioned but whose bat more than compensated. If Bazzana keeps squaring up 98 mph sinkers, the Guardians will figure out the rest,” Cleveland Baseball Talk Podcast wrote.
It’s unlikely Bazzana can crack the Opening Day lineup even if he continues hitting home runs in Spring Training, as Brayan Rocchio and Gabriel Arias have the middle infield occupied at the moment. That being said, it’s only a matter of time because he has the offensive upside that trumps anything those two are capable of by far.
You never want to rush a prospect, but it’s easy to see the similarities between Bazzana and Kipnis, which only makes fans want Bazzana’s debut even more. This team needs an impact middle-of-the-order bat in the worst way, but if we’re all just a little bit patient, that bat could be here as soon as a few months from now.
