Trade Deadline Gamble Is Paying Off Big For Guardians

Heading into the trade deadline, the Cleveland Guardians had a need for a very specific type of player: a right-handed-hitting outfielder with impactful power. They were among the worst squads at hitting lefties, so they needed someone who could consistently produce against them.

They went out and acquired their guy, Jo Adell, from the Los Angeles Angels. Adell hit 37 home runs and drove in 98 runs last year in LA, but posted a mediocre 91 wRC+ with his old team in 2026 before getting traded to Cleveland.

After joining an energetic postseason run, Adell has helped improve the Guardians’ offense, particularly against lefties. He has hit six homers with his new team, and 22 on the season as a whole.

His ability to come up big in the clutch and evolve as a run-producer has been a godsend for Cleveland. Now, they have a legit power threat against southpaws with the ability to bring people home.

“Adell’s RBI was his 31st since making his Guardians debut Aug. 4, second most in the American League over that span behind Baltimore’s Pete Alonso (36). Adell also has eight go-ahead RBI and six game-winning RBI in 42 games with Cleveland,” Noga wrote.

A peek into those numbers, and you can understand why fans want him at the plate with games on the line. The game slows down for him with runners in scoring position, and he usually delivers the big hit when his team needs him the most.

Cleveland wanted a big bat to produce runs in the middle of their lineup, and they got one in Adell. He is second in the American League in RBI since the deadline, all for the cost of a solid, but not spectacular, catching prospect in Jacob Cozart.

Adell, who has a 105 wRC+ with the Guardians, didn’t hit the ball particularly hard in his go-ahead single on Sunday, but it worked, and it represented the winning run in a pitching duel.

The former Angel has been so good that there’s been talk about the team potentially extending him at some point. It might be premature, but he has sure given the Guardians what they wanted out of him since bringing him to Cleveland.
