The 2026 minor league season is nearing an end, and we already know who has been the best and most impressive prospect in every organization. Cleveland Guardians fans know exactly who has had the most productive year in their farm system.
It’s none other than first baseman/outfielder Ralphy Velazquez. Their 2023 first-round pick had already posted excellent seasons in the minor leagues before this year, but he has blossomed into one of the game’s best hitting prospects. To sum it up, he has taken a step forward and lifted his projected ceiling, making him a potential star whenever he gets to the majors.
Bleacher Report identified every team’s minor leaguer of the year and had nothing but great things to say about Velazquez.
“Velazquez has some of the best raw power of any prospect, and more than enough hit tool to fully utilize it at the next level. The 21-year-old put up an absurd .356/.433/.867 line with 15 home runs in 23 games in August, and he should have a real shot at an Opening Day roster spot in 2027,” Joel Reuter wrote.
Heading into the 2026 campaign, Velazquez had more raw power than game power, which usually means he can hit a ball far but has room to grow when it comes to the frequency with which it leaves the yard. Well, it’s safe to say that changed.
Velazquez’s previous career-high in homers was 22, established last year between High-A and Double-A in 122 games. This season, he has 29 in 121 games, between Double-A and Triple-A.
The best and most promising thing about his statistical profile is that he hasn’t sacrificed contact to get to that lofty home run total. His slash line this year at the two levels is a robust .290/.379/.548 with a 142 wRC+.
If the Guardians wanted, they could have Velazquez mashing in the middle of their lineup tomorrow, helping the team seal its ticket to the postseason and, potentially, its third straight division title. They are choosing the conservative approach, though.
