The Cleveland Guardians have leaned heavily on an impressive wave of young talent in 2026. Roughly halfway through the season, that strategy is working out quite well as the team will now be sending three young stars, which includes two rookies to Philadelphia for the 2026 All-Star Game, which is a testament to how strong the developmental system is in Cleveland these days.
Cade Smith, Parker Messick, and Travis Bazzana all made the team, and they only represent the tip of the iceberg. It wouldn’t be shocking whatsoever to see other young talents like Gavin Williams, Angel Martinez, Chase DeLauter, Joey Cantillo, or a handful of others make an All-Star team in the coming years.
If you fast forward a few more years, first base prospect Ralphy Velazquez may factor into that equation as well. If he keeps going at his current rate, that timeline is going to get sped up as Guardians Prospective shared that Velazquez clubbed his tenth home run of the year on Saturday for Triple-A Columbus, which extended his impressive on-base streak.
“Double digits! Cleveland #Guardians 21yr old (1B) prospect Ralphy Velazquez goes opposite field for his 10th HR of the season in 4th inning for Columbus extending his on-base streak to 25 games,” said Guardians Prospective.

Velazquez is now considered by many to be Cleveland’s top prospect, and his archetype is just about exactly what the Guardians need at the moment. A power-hitting first baseman is a position the team hasn’t adequately filled since Josh Naylor left, as Kyle Manzardo, Rhys Hoskins, and others have been a bit inconsistent over the past year or two.
It’s all looking like a matter of time until Velazquez grabs hold of that position and doesn’t let it go. At just 21 years old, he has an impressive .874 OPS thus far and is already putting pressure on the front office to give him a look. It’s not out of the question that he’ll find his way to Cleveland before the end of this season, but you never want to run the risk of rushing a prospect or being overly reliant on too many young guys at the big league level.
It’s not hard to see why Velazquez is considered the best this organization has to offer. That says a lot considering how much young talent has been filtering through the organization this year, but he is the real deal and if he keeps hitting like this, his path to Cleveland is going to get clearer by the day.
