Tanner Bibee’s 2026 season had plenty of frustrating moments, but it ended with some well deserved hardware. The Cleveland Guardians right-hander was named the American League Gold Glove winner at pitcher on Sunday night, the first Gold Glove of his career. Bibee beat out two other finalists, Jacob deGrom of the Rangers and José Soriano, for the honor. It is a nice reward for a pitcher who took the ball every fifth day for Cleveland and rarely got the credit he deserved.
“You’re golden, Tanner. Congratulations to RHP Tanner Bibee on winning the 2026 American League @RawlingsSports Gold Glove!” Cleveland Guardians wrote.

Gold Gloves for pitchers often get overlooked, but they recognize the parts of the job that never show up in a pitching line. Fielding comebackers, covering first base, getting off the mound on bunts and controlling the running game can all change the outcome of an inning. Bibee has always been an athletic presence on the mound, and his glove has drawn recognition before, including a fielding award back in 2024. This year, the voters finally made it official.
The award caps a strange season for Bibee. He started on Opening Day and made 33 starts, leading the Guardians with 188 innings pitched. He also went 7-15 with a 4.36 ERA, and his record was dragged down by some of the lowest run support in baseball. For long stretches of the summer he was one of the most consistent starters in the American League, even when the wins did not follow.
October was tough, too. Bibee made just one postseason appearance, out of the bullpen against the White Sox in the ALDS, and he was not used again during Cleveland’s run to the ALCS. He admitted last week that the decision was hard to accept, but he also made it clear he is already focused on bouncing back in 2027 and helping deliver a championship to Cleveland. Winning a Gold Glove only a few days later should give him even more confidence heading into the offseason.
Bibee also joins some good company. Shane Bieber took home the AL Gold Glove at pitcher in 2022, and now another Cleveland starter has his name on the award. Bibee and Kwan, who was a finalist in center field, were the Guardians’ two finalists this year, which says a lot about how much the organization values defense.
Bibee is under contract through 2029 thanks to the five-year extension he signed in 2025, and Stephen Vogt has already said he expects him to remain one of the anchors of the rotation. The Guardians will need him to be exactly that with Foster Griffin heading into free agency. If Bibee pitches as well as he fields next season, Cleveland’s rotation will be in great shape.
