The 2026 season is in the books for the Cleveland Guardians, so now it’s time to begin thinking about the off-season. The Guardians will need to retool this winter, but they have their eyes on the bigger picture right now.
It’s still extremely early in the off-season, but the Guardians are reportedly one of the favorites to sign someone already. Early reports are that the Guardians are the favorites to sign shortstop prospect Javier Amigo out of the Dominican Republic.
“Cleveland Guardians are favorites to sign (SS) prospect Javier Amigo out of San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic. Amigo trains at Fortuna Training Facility. He is not eligible to sign until the 1/15/28 International signing day,” Guardians Prospective posted.

The Guardians have not been shy about signing international players in the past, so fans shouldn’t be surprised by this news. Just this past year, the Guardians signed (SS/3B) Svert Reinoso, (SS) Karel Naranjo, and (SS) Rafeliz Lara, who were all key international signings for the team in 2026.
This organization has heavily invested in international shortstops, and it’s beginning to pay off at the big league level. This past season, the Guardians had shortstop Angel Genao make his MLB debut in early August. Genao is a switch-hitter who signed out of the Dominican Republic in January of 2021. The 22-year-old slashed .213/.281/.291 with two home runs and six RBI in 43 games with the Guardians this past season.
The Guardians are stockpiling young infielders with four more shortstops or third basemen ranked in their top 30 prospects, according to MLB.com. This team appears to be set for the future in the middle infielder, but they aren’t done adding just yet.
It won’t be until 2028, but signing Amigo would be a big win for the Guardians. Sadly, fans won’t be seeing him playing in Cleveland anytime soon. He’d need years to develop, but the Guardians’ landing another standout international player is a great step towards the future.
