Cleveland Guardians starting pitcher Tanner Bibee can’t seem to find the win column early in the season. It’s not for lack of effort or skill, but Bibbe has just been unlucky through his first handful of starts. The right-hander has pitched well lately, and it hasn’t seemed to matter when it comes to securing the win.
On Saturday, Bibee tossed six innings, allowing one earned run with one hit while recording nine strikeouts. You’d think that kind of performance would be enough to get a starting pitcher that win. Sadly, it wasn’t, as the Guardians dropped the game in 11 innings to the Minnesota Twins.
Afterwards, Bibee was asked about his mindset after remaining winless on the season.
“I go out there, and I throw up zeros and goes deep into the game, do stuff as much as I can. I think I mentnioned this last time, it’s like I’m playing a very different sports then a lot of the hitters. It’s like we coexist, but it’s very different. So I feel like it’s just it is what it is. It’s just baseball sometimes,” Bibee said.

After that outing, Bibee is sitting out 0-5 with a 4.17 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, and a 45/18 K:BB ratio across nine starts. The overall record isn’t pretty, but Bibee can’t really be blamed for all of it. Over his last five starts, Bibee has allowed two earned runs or less in four of those outings. He’s pitching extremely well, but the Guardians aren’t giving him much run support.
During that span of five starts, the Guardians’ offense has scored two runs or fewer in four of those games. It’s tough for any pitcher to get a win when the offense isn’t helping at all. This has been the theme for the Guardians all season long. The pitching has been outstanding most of the time, but the offense can’t keep up daily.
Bibee is a veteran and knows that sometimes baseball just goes this way. Sometimes there’s nothing you can do, especially after you’ve been taken out of the game. The right-hander seems to be staying positive about the situation.
There’s not much you can do about it besides go out there and pitch the best to your ability every five days.
