Stephen Vogt has had a close-up view of exactly how difficult the White Sox have become for his ballclub this season, and his latest comments made clear he does not see Chicago as a typical bottom of the division opponent anymore. Cleveland and Chicago have now played each other 10 times over the last two weeks, with the two clubs trading the top spot in the AL Central back and forth throughout. Sunday’s finale was another reminder of just how tight these matchups have been, with the Guardians falling 7-6 in a game that featured five lead changes and a go-ahead run that came around to score on a misplayed grounder.
Vogt addressed the rivalry directly afterward, and gave his honest thoughts about the White Sox.
“These are two very evenly matched teams,” Vogt said.

The first five games of the last six meetings were each decided by a single run, and Sunday’s contest swung on a series of small mistakes rather than one team simply overpowering the other. Cleveland managed to win the first 2 games of the series against Chicago in dramatic fashion with late walk-off finishes, only to see the White Sox answer right back with their own gritty victories, including Sunday’s win, built on home runs from Kyle Teel, Tristan Peters and Colson Montgomery.
Chicago has built a lineup around young power bats like Montgomery and Peters, while leaning on a bullpen that has found ways to grind out close games late. Cleveland, meanwhile, has stayed competitive despite significant injuries to key hitters like Jose Ramirez and Angel Martinez, relying instead on a rotation and lineup filled with rookies who have more than held their own. Neither club has separated itself from the other through 10 meetings, and Vogt’s words made it sound like he expects that trend to continue the rest of the season.
With the season series between these two teams now sitting at 4-3 in Chicago’s favor, every remaining matchup between the Guardians and White Sox carries real weight in the division race. Cleveland’s path to the top of the AL Central runs directly through a team that has proven capable of matching the Guardians blow for blow.
