The Cleveland Guardians can’t afford to lose many games from now on.
They put themselves in a tough spot after winning just nine games in June.
That’s why dropping three in a row against the Atlanta Braves was such a big blow.
Afterward, manager Stephen Vogt opened up on the series sweep.
“It was frustrating. It was a frustrating weekend for all of us,” Vogt said. “We know we need to play better. We know we need to continue to work and continue to fight. But we’ve got another game tomorrow, so let’s get right back out there. Let’s get back in the win column and get on another run.”
The Guardians were playing their best baseball of the season before this skid.
They had won seven of their previous nine games, and they didn’t look like the same team that dropped 10 games in a row shortly before the All-Star break.
It was the first time the Guardians were swept since July 4-6 against the Detroit Tigers.
The Braves were 15 games under .500 before this series, and while they boast more talent than their record, they weren’t the type of team the Guardians could afford to lose to at this point.
The Guardians still boast the best record in the American League since July 7.
They will look to bounce back on a six-game road trip against the Arizona Diamondbacks and Texas Rangers.
That will be a crucial stretch for their playoff aspirations, and it will be interesting to see how they manage to get back on track.
They have a chance, but there’s no margin for error.
