The Cleveland Guardians continue to experiment with their defensive alignment this spring, and Steven Kwan remains a key part of those discussions. The Gold Glove outfielder has spent time playing center field during camp as the team evaluates potential lineup combinations. While the early returns have been encouraging, manager Stephen Vogt says the organization is still taking a patient approach. For now, the Guardians appear focused on gathering information before committing to any long-term decision.
Kwan has primarily built his reputation as one of the best defensive left fielders in baseball. During spring training, Cleveland has given Kwan opportunities to handle center field duties as part of its evaluation process. Vogt recently provided an update on how the team is approaching the situation.
Vogt said it is still “too early” to determine whether Kwan playing center field will become a permanent plan for the team.
“The whole thought behind this is to get Kwan as many reps in center field, knowing that if we need to, we can move him back to left field on opening day,” Vogt said.

That cautious approach makes sense given the importance of Kwan to Cleveland’s lineup. The Guardians rely on him not only for defense but also for his ability to get on base and set the tone at the top of the order. Any defensive transition would need to ensure that it does not disrupt his offensive production.
At the same time, giving Kwan experience in center field could provide valuable flexibility for the roster.
Spring training is often the time when teams test different alignments and roles before Opening Day arrives. For the Guardians, the early games have created an opportunity to see how Kwan responds to the challenge of a new defensive position.
Even if the team ultimately decides to keep him in left field, the experience could still benefit Kwan by expanding his comfort level across the outfield. For now, the organization appears content to continue evaluating the situation while gathering more information.
