There are 10 players who have made their MLB debut this season with the Cleveland Guardians, and the most recent may be one of the best. Infielder Angel Genao has been a standout since he was promoted on Aug. 5.
The 22-year-old had one of the best debut games in history, with four hits in his first four at-bats against the New York Mets. He has kept hitting since then, including a 2-for-4 performance against the San Diego Padres on Friday night.
Afterward, Cleveland manager Stephen Vogt said he has been “really impressed” with the young Guardians player, who does not seem overwhelmed by his new environment.

After dealing with a shoulder injury last season, Genao opened this year back at Double-A Akron before being promoted to Triple-A Columbus. With Chase DeLauter and Travis Bazzana making their MLB regular-season debuts earlier in the year, Genao has become Cleveland’s No. 1 overall prospect, according to MLB.com.
Before getting called up, Genao had a .309/.395/.494 slash line with 17 doubles, 10 home runs, and 42 RBIs in 72 games for Columbus. In his first nine MLB games, he has a .323/.382/.452 slash line with one double, one homer, and three RBIs. Perhaps most impressively, he has struck out just twice in 31 big league at-bats.
It was fitting that Genao made his MLB debut against the Mets, because he has said that former Cleveland shortstop Francisco Lindor was his favorite player growing up. While Genao played the overwhelming majority of his games at that position in the minors, he has been used only at second base and third base with the Guardians, who have Brayan Rocchio as their everyday shortstop. With Jose Ramirez struggling after coming off the injured list, the Guardians could use Genao more at third base to give the veteran some time at DH.
No matter what, if he keeps hitting as he has, Vogt will have to find a way to get Genao into the lineup as much as he can during the pennant race.
