The Cleveland Guardians endured a tough outing on Saturday.
Ranger Suarez threw seven shutout innings to lift the Philadelphia Phillies on the road for a 7-1 win.
Bryce Harper posted a season-high three hits, including a two-run homer off Joey Cantillo that opened up the door for a disastrous six-run eighth inning for the visitors.
The Guardians also got him with a two-run double by Max Kepler and RBI singles by Brandon Marsh and Edmundo Sosa.
Cantillo failed to retire any of the first seven hitters he faced, and he was charged with seven hits and five runs in just 1.1 innings.
When asked about that, manager Stephen Vogt admitted that the Phillies just kept pounding and making the most of Cantillo’s struggles:
“They just jumped Joey [Cantillo],” said Vogt. “He made the mistake to Harper and it happened quick. There was a little lack of execution. We’ve seen Joey be really good. Tonight wasn’t his night.”
Suarez only gave up three hits in 82 pitches to get his first win of the season after two starts.
The southpaw dominated with five strikeouts and one walk.
The Guardians are 23-16, but they couldn’t get much going this time around.
They had to wait until the ninth inning to get on the board, when Carlos Santana logged his 1,100th career RBI on a sacrifice fly to bring Gabriel Arias home.
He became just the 18th switch-hitter in MLB history to reach that mark.
Cantillo’s outing wasted a gem by Tanner Bibee.
He gave up just one run in seven innings, allowing five hits with three strikeouts and no walks.
He had won his previous two starts to take his season record to 3-3.
The Guardians will look to win the series on Sunday after splitting the first two games.
