The Cleveland Guardians fell 5-3 to the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday and continued their early-season trend of inconsistency. Cleveland hasn’t had a winning or losing streak longer than two games yet, which has made it difficult to open up any separation from the pack in the AL Central.
One big reason why the team hasn’t been able to put together any consistency has been due to the offense. Cleveland has shown signs of breaking out offensively, but the Guardians have been unable to string together consecutive strong performances from one day to the next, as evidenced by Saturday’s performance where the team needed a late rally to squeeze three runs across the board just a day after scoring eight times.
Manager Stephen Vogt doesn’t sound too worried about the offense and he had a positive outlook even after Saturday’s loss. Mason Horodyski of WEWS shared a quote from Vogt after the game and he had a lot of praise for the fight his team showed.
“Guardians manager Stephen Vogt on Cleveland’s at bats in the 9th inning: “So much fun to watch our guys never quit. You know, Hos with the big single… Manzo with a huge pinch hit double, and Brito works a good walk, and then Varland got nasty, and that happens. That’s what closers do,” said Vogt.

The Guardians were on the verge of pulling off the improbable comeback before Louis Varland locked the game down, and as Vogt said, that’s just baseball and sometimes that happens. The fight was encouraging, and that type of offensive thump is a good sign for the rest of the season.
It was the kind of spark this team didn’t consistently show last season when it had arguably the worst offense in baseball. If guys like Kyle Manzardo and Rhys Hoskins can start providing more pop, fans could finally start to see this lineup produce at its full potential.
Cleveland will look to win the series on Sunday as Slade Cecconi looks to put a rough start behind him. He has been the weakest member of the rotation thus far and is in dire need of a big performance.
