Entering this season, most Cleveland Guardians fans hoped to watch Chase DeLauter take the field at some point.
That hope prevails, but he might not be the most MLB-ready prospect in the farm system right now.
C.J. Kayfus keeps dominating in the minors, cracking a recent Top 100 list and getting promoted to Triple-A Columbus.
The 1B/OF prospect has had quite a time in the minors.
As shown by Guardians Prospective on X, he has 80 extra-base hits in 165 career games.
Most (XBH) by a #Guardians minor league player since the start of the 2024 season.
C.J. Kayfus – 165 G / 80 XBH
Juan Brito – 164 G / 68 XBH
Wuilfredo Antunez – 144 G / 63 XBH
Cooper Ingle – 150 G / 62 XBH
Johnathan Rodriguez – 164 G / 62 XBH
Alfonsin Rosario – 161 G / 60 XBH…— Guardians Prospective (@CleGuardPro) June 19, 2025
Kayfus recently turned plenty of heads when he homered off MLB star Max Scherzer, who was pitching for Buffalo on a rehab assignment.
The 23-year-old is slashing .318/.386/.583 with seven home runs, 22 RBIs, 11 doubles and four triples in 40 games with Columbus.
The Guardians clearly need some help on offense.
Kayfus has played more at first base than in the outfield, and the Guardians are set in the infield with Carlos Santana and Kyle Manzardo.
The prospect may not get a chance at DH either, as David Fry has held on to that spot because he cannot play the field this season as he recovers from offseason surgery on his elbow.
One would assume that Kayfus would have a chance at getting the nod over outfielders Nolan Jones or Johnathan Rodriguez, but because he’s not on the 40-man roster, the Guardians will have to make a move to get him to the majors.
Whatever the case, Kayfus looks like a future star, and they need to find a way to get him on the field.
