The Cleveland Guardians needed someone to step up against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Gavin Williams took the mound in search of a bounce-back effort, and he delivered.
Williams threw 5.1 scoreless innings, allowing just four hits and one walk with five strikeouts.
It was his fifth scoreless outing of the year.
However, this wasn’t much of a surprise.
As shown by Jesse Borek of MLB.com, Williams has been lights out against lefty hitters.
“Arizona boasts a left-handed-heavy offense, a fact that played right into Williams’ favor. He hasn’t just been good against left-handed hitters in 2025, he’s been historically good. We’re talking best-on-record good. Lefties have just a .142 batting average against Williams this year (34-for-239). The last two right-handed pitchers to hold left-handed batters to an average nearly as low were Zac Gallen (2022, .146) and Pedro Martinez (2000, .150), the latter of whom is generally considered to have authored one of the greatest individual seasons of the modern era. And Williams is still eight points below that,” Borek wrote.
The Guardians are 3.0 games behind in the AL Wild Card race, and they’re 8.5 games behind the Detroit Tigers in the AL Central with six upcoming games against them.
With 38 games left this season, the Guardians have no margin for error, and they can’t afford to dwell on past losses.
Of course, having Williams pitch at this level will do wonders for their postseason aspirations.
More than that, they will love their chances against any lefty-heavy team that comes between them and their postseason aspirations.
