The Cleveland Guardians need to figure things out with Steven Kwan.
The All-Star outfielder is one of the best players in baseball, and he’s the type of foundational piece a team needs to succeed.
To highlight Kwan’s abilities, insider Paul Hoynes shared an impressive stat.
“Steven Kwan’s 9% swing-and-miss rate is the lowest in the American League and second-lowest in the big leagues. San Diego’s Luis Arraez is at 5.3%,” Hoynes wrote.
Kwan’s bat control meets the eye test, but putting it in numbers demonstrates it further.
He went through a slump as the trade deadline approached, but he remained one of the game’s most disciplined hitters.
Multiple teams reportedly reached out to the Guardians to try to trade for him, but no deal was reached.
The Guardians have been trying to sign him to a contract extension for months, yet it seems like they’re still far apart in those talks.
Even so, there was no need to trade him at the time, knowing that they could always pick up the negotiation during the offseason.
The Guardians need players committed to the organization like Kwan has always been.
Their front office has a long history of moving on from top players before they’re about to get a significant raise, which is why fans still can’t be sure that Kwan is going to be around for the long run.
But after watching him deliver over and over, Cleveland just can’t afford to lose him.
