The Cleveland Guardians couldn’t get anything going at the plate in Game 1 of the AL Wild Card series.
Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal was lights out, giving up one run on three hits with three walks and 14 strikeouts in 7.2 innings.
Ironically, one of Cleveland’s weakest links on offense was the player who fared best against him.
“Austin Hedges was the only player in the Guardians starting lineup today to reach base [two times] vs. Skubal with a pair of walks,” Guardians Prospective wrote on X.

The Guardians aren’t the best offensive team in baseball by any means.
That’s just not the way the team is constructed.
Also, there should be no shame in struggling against a pitcher of Skubal’s caliber.
Now that the Guardians likely won’t have to face him again, they should find more success in Game 2, and hopefully in Game 3.
Of course, pitchers have a shorter leash in the playoffs, but that would only be better for the Guardians, as the Tigers have arguably the weakest bullpen remaining.
Cleveland needs Jose Ramirez and Steven Kwan to play up to their All-Star level.
Also, the Guardians can’t afford to shoot themselves in the foot like they did in Game 1, as they essentially cost Gavin Williams the win after he also dominated on the mound.
Whatever the case, there’s no need to panic.
This team has been through worse this season, and they have never lost their focus, regardless of how difficult things may have seemed.
