The Cleveland Guardians didn’t make much noise at all this offseason and are clearly going all in on a youth movement, placing a lot of pressure on guys like Chase DeLauter, CJ Kayfus, and George Valera to turn around what was at times a lifeless offense in 2025. The youngsters have given fans plenty of reason to be optimistic, but the recent signing of free agent slugger Rhys Hoskins was certainly a welcomed addition as well in case some of these kids struggle a bit out of the gate.
Hoskins is a perfect contingency plan to hedge against the potential skids that come with young hitters adjusting to major league pitching, and he brings plenty of veteran expertise and playoff experience with him to town as well. It’s unclear where he currently slots into this lineup, but he recently sent a message about how he sees himself fitting in here.
Tim Stebbins of MLB.com recently spoke with the newest Guardian and got his perspective on the team and the role he anticipates playing. Hoskins told him that his way of viewing the game aligns
“Talking with [Vogt] and the way that he sees this team and how he sees the game, I think matches up with a lot of things that I’ve been able to accomplish in my career,” said Hoskins. “[I’m] trying to come in here and find a way to make an impact and make this team and help these guys win.”
Vogt recently said that Hoskins should see some action in Spring Training by the end of the week, so Guardians fans won’t have to wait long to get a glimpse at their new first baseman.
Hoskins spent years with the Philadelphia Phillies and spent the last two with the Milwaukee Brewers. He comes to the Guardians with a low price tag due to his persistent injuries, including a thumb sprain that effectively took him out for the entire second half of last season, a hamstring injury that caused him to miss about six weeks in 2024, and a torn ACL that eliminated his entire 2023 campaign.
He still has a career .820 OPS and could provide some much-needed thump to this lineup from the right side of the plate. At 32 years old, he should have plenty left in the tank, and he could emerge as a true wild card for this team if he can solidify a spot in the everyday lineup.
