The Cleveland Guardians just lost one of their most valuable assets.
At least they got something in return for his services.
More than ‘something,’ they got a top-five prospect from the Toronto Blue Jays.
That’s why FOX Sports analyst John Sabol believes this was a smart move by the Guardians:
“Trading Shane Bieber for an organization’s top 5 prospect (Khal Stephen) is a smart move. Even if Bieber stayed in Cleveland and pitched well in the final two months of the season, he was never going to re-sign with the Guardians,” he said. “Dealing him was a no-brainer.”

The Guardians essentially spent almost $10 million and plenty of time and resources to rehab Shane Bieber just to move him for a young man.
Even so, Khal Stephen is a promising player who might be ready to take the mound in the majors in no time.
Bieber, as great a player as he is, was most likely going to decline his $16 million player option.
He was going to become a free agent, and that would’ve awarded the Guardians a compensatory draft pick.
As such, they needed to find someone who would be more valuable than whoever they could get with that selection, and they found just that in Stephen.
Some players are never the same after Tommy John surgery, and the fact of the matter is that Bieber’s future with the organization looked grim at best.
Of course, there’s always a chance that they will bring him back in free agency in the winter, but he might be looking forward to joining a big-market team on a big-money deal.
As for the Guardians, they now have another high-end project to try to develop until he gets too expensive and they move on from him, just like they usually do.
