On Tuesday, Nick Martinez of the Tampa Bay Rays dominated the Cleveland Guardians’ offense for seven innings, allowing no runs and striking out four. One of those four victims was 2024 No. 1 draft pick Travis Bazzana, who was making his MLB debut.
Going down on strikes to Martinez should be nothing to be ashamed of, because it was Bazzana’s first at-bat in the majors, and Martinez boasts a 1.70 ERA in 2026. In fact, the pitcher himself didn’t hide his admiration for the young infielder’s swing after the game.
In a chat with Guardians insider Tom Withers, Martinez said he was impressed with Bazzana, who went 0-for-2 and walked twice in his debut. He had specific praise for his swing.
“That swing will play,” Martinez said.

That swing has helped Bazzana get to where he currently is, ever since he was a little kid, to his days at Oregon State. It also helped him get taken with the first overall pick in the 2024 Draft.
The swing, plus his excellent plate discipline, was behind his flawless ascent through the minor leagues, where he slashed a cool .252/.391/.435 with an .826 OPS in multiple levels, ranging from the Complex League to Triple-A Columbus.
Bazzana might not have 40-homer power or enough contact to be a perennial threat to hit .300, but the overall package is both well-rounded and enticing. He also has the ability to get walks at a high rate, hence his incredible .391 OBP in the minor leagues.
The Guardians believe he could be an All-Star and a steady contributor in their 2026 run, and apparently so does Martinez. He faced him on Tuesday and got to see his talent from up close.
Bazzana was enough of a threat to Tampa that, midway in his ninth-inning at-bat with a runner on second and two outs, they decided to intentionally walk him when he had worked the count in his favor to 2-0. That shows they respect his pedigree and natural talent.
From this point forward, Bazzana will have to earn everything on the field. Luckily for him, he is equipped with an impressive set of tools and with a brilliant mind, too.
