Petey Halpin’s Postseason Stat Line Tells You Everything

The Cleveland Guardians are officially in the driver’s seat with a 2-1 lead in the ALCS after Thursday afternoon’s 3-2 victory in Game 3. As you often see with most other teams that go on incredible playoff runs, there will be a new unlikely hero every day, and on Thursday, Guardians outfielder Petey Halpin was that hero.

Halpin’s two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning gave Cleveland the lead for good, and his iconic bat flip will now be one of the most replayed clips in team history. After hitting just four homers in 178 at-bats in the regular season, Halpin smashed his first playoff homer in unlikely fashion, which boosted his overall postseason numbers into the stratosphere.

Guardians Prospective shared Halpin’s updated postseason numbers after Thursday’s homer, and they are quite the leap from his regular season stats. Halpin hit just .225 with a .594 OPS in the regular season, but both of those numbers are way up this October and hopefully indicate a sign of things to come for his future in MLB.

It was a bold move to replace the struggling Angel Martinez in the lineup, but Stephen Vogt isn’t a two-time Manager of the Year for no reason. He was happy for his young outfielder after the game and even flashed a rare smile during his postgame presser.

With the spark Halpin has provided thus far, he has likely earned himself an everyday role for the time being, at least against right-handed pitchers. You have to roll with the hot hand this time of year, and Halpin certainly fits that label.

Cleveland has a chance to take a commanding 3-1 lead on Friday afternoon (weather permitted), and it’ll be anybody’s guess who the Game 4 hero will be. Could it be Halpin once again? Only time will tell.
