Petey Halpin delivered the biggest moment of his young career on Thursday afternoon, and his manager could not have been happier for him. With the Cleveland Guardians trailing the Tampa Bay Rays 2-1 in the fifth inning of Game 3 of the American League Championship Series, Halpin crushed a two run homer into the right field seats to give Cleveland a lead it would never give back. The Guardians held on for a 3-2 win and took a 2-1 lead in the best of seven series. Halpin celebrated with a towering bat flip that quickly became the talk of Cleveland, but the moment meant just as much to the people in his dugout.
After the game, Stephen Vogt was asked about his young outfielder, and his reaction showed just how proud he was.
“Really cool, happy for Petey… really fun moment for him,” Vogt said.

Vogt’s words were simple, but they carried plenty of weight. Halpin has not been one of the headline names on this roster, but Vogt has trusted him with a bigger role as the postseason has gone on, and that trust paid off in a big way.
Halpin has been getting regular starts in center field, with Steven Kwan sliding over to left. The move started in the decisive Game 5 of the division series against the White Sox, when Halpin went 2-3 in Cleveland’s 2-0 win. He followed that with a hit in Game 2 of the ALCS before his breakout on Thursday.
The homer came at exactly the right time.
The celebration that followed only added to the moment. Halpin admired the blast and flipped his bat high into the air before starting his trip around the bases.
Vogt has said all year that the depth of this roster is the story of the season, and Halpin is a perfect example. Cleveland has gotten big contributions from unexpected places throughout this postseason, from Foster Griffin’s record setting relief outing in the division series to Patrick Bailey’s game tying homer in Game 1 of this series. On Thursday, it was Halpin’s turn.
The pitching staff made sure his homer stood up. Gavin Williams struck out nine over five innings, and the bullpen held the Rays to one hit the rest of the way, with Cade Smith striking out Yandy Díaz with the tying run on third base in the eighth before closing out a four out save.
The Guardians are now two wins away from their first World Series appearance since 2016.
