The Cleveland Guardians may have found another pitching gem and prime reinforcement for the end of the season.
It’s still way too early, and the team couldn’t cap it off with a win, but Parker Messick’s debut was certainly one for the ages.
As pointed out by Bob Nightengale on X, the 24-year-old looked like he belonged in his first taste of MLB action.
Fabulous MLB debut for Cleveland Guardians starter Parker Messick, who gets a standing ovation from Guardians fans as he leaves the game vs. the Diamondbacks:
6.2 innings
7 hits
1 run
1 walk
6 strikeouts
83 pitches, 56 strikes— Bob Nightengale (@BNightengale) August 20, 2025
The Guardians had their No. 12-ranked prospect on the mound for 6.2 innings.
He gave up just one run on seven hits and one walk, adding six strikeouts.
The 2022 second-round pick had turned plenty of heads at Triple-A Columbus, and he looked more than poised to showcase his repertoire of changeups, four-seamers, and sliders at the next level.
Stephen Vogt pulled him out of the game with two outs in the seventh inning, turning to veteran Hunter Gaddis after 83 pitches.
Messick walked towards the dugout to a standing ovation at Chase Field.
Unfortunately, the Guardians’ bullpen later wasted his solid debut.
Lourdes Gurriel Jr. tied things up with a solo homer in the ninth inning before a walk-off hit in the 10th to make it 3-2 D-Backs.
The Guardians have the best record in the American League since July 7, piling up a 24-13 mark in the last 37 games.
Still, they’re choosing the worst possible time to get into a slump, first getting swept by the Atlanta Braves and now blowing one-run leads in back-to-back games in the desert.
At least Messick’s debut was more than encouraging for a team that’s looking to add another arm to its rotation.
