The Cleveland Guardians found another gem.
Parker Messick, the team’s No. 12 prospect according to MLB Pipeline, looked like a veteran in his first taste of MLB action.
As pointed out by Jay 7 on X, Messick did something that hadn’t been done since 1964 in his debut.
He’s just the sixth player in Cleveland Guardians history to be out there for at least 6.1 innings and strike out six or more hitters.
He joined the likes of Luis Tiant, Herb Score, Dick Tomanek, Fred Blanding, and Bill Hart on that very exclusive list.

Messick struck out six hitters, gave up one run and one walk, and allowed seven hits.
He looked like he was more than ready for the opportunity.
Unfortunately, the team wasn’t able to capitalize on his impressive performance.
A game-tying home run by Lourdes Gurriel Jr. in the ninth inning led to an eventual walk-off hit in the 10th inning.
The Guardians have no margin for error at this point in the season, and they simply cannot afford to keep losing games they were supposed to win.
They’ve now blown two leads to the Arizona Diamondbacks to lose their second consecutive series after being swept by the Atlanta Braves, so perhaps the loss of Emmanuel Clase is finally starting to become a factor.
Even so, Messick’s impressive debut was clearly a good sign.
This team needs to add another reliable arm to its rotation after optioning Joey Cantillo and losing Luis L. Ortiz, and Messick looks like a strong candidate to do so.
