If there’s a word to define Brayan Rocchio’s 2026 campaign with the Cleveland Guardians, it’s versatility. The infielder has played second and shortstop, excelling at both, and he has hit in multiple lineup spots in his breakout season. Wherever they put him, he produces.
Rocchio started the season as the Guardians’ ninth hitter and was bumped up in mid-June after the injury crisis resulting from Jose Ramirez, Angel Martinez, and Chase DeLauter all going down in the same game on June 13.
Since then, he has been used either near the top, as a second or third-hole hitter, or in the middle of the lineup, specifically the fifth and sixth slots. And no matter where he is slotted, he keeps mashing.
Guardians insider Paul Hoynes can’t help but be impressed by Rocchio’s evolution as a hitter and ability to come through in big spots.
“Rocchio seems to me, really has stepped up. They moved him up in the lineup, as we’ve talked about before, to replace Martínez and Ramírez. And no matter where you put him, he’s really swinging a… he’s really kind of stepped into that role that Jose has had, you know, kind of the second, third or fourth hitter that can be depended on to produce at big moments,” Hoynes said.
Before the 2026 campaign, Rocchio was a lousy hitter. That’s probably putting it nicely, to be honest. His wRC+ was routinely in the 70s, not even close to the league-average threshold of 100.
Something has clicked this year, as the talented infielder is slashing a strong .276/.347/.395 with six homers, 15 stolen bases, and a 112 wRC+. He is not just a top shortstop in the American League but one of the best players in the junior circuit, ranking 11th in fWAR with 2.7.
The start of Rocchio’s renaissance was last summer, when he spent a significant portion of the season in Triple-A working on his game. He came back up in July and was much, much better.
Now, after being snubbed for the All-Star Game, Rocchio’s biggest challenge will be to sustain this kind of offensive performance throughout the rest of the season. It won’t be easy, but he now has the tools to get it done.
