The Cleveland Guardians are navigating another challenging season with outfielder Lane Thomas sidelined by a persistent plantar fasciitis injury.
The 30-year-old remains out indefinitely as he considers surgical options that could provide long-term relief but would end his 2025 campaign.
Thomas has battled a foot injury throughout the year, limiting him to just 39 games.
Even cortisone shots have failed to solve the problem, leaving surgery as the most viable path forward.
With Cleveland still fighting for a playoff spot, his absence creates additional uncertainty for the team’s postseason hopes.
The veteran outfielder recently discussed his situation while preparing for a specialist consultation.
“I think the next step is I’ve got an appointment with a guy in Indianapolis. Just talked to him about this whole road. I think there’s a few options, but I think there’s a good percentage-outcome surgery they do. It’s nothing super intense. It’s not a crazy long recovery time. It’s kinda like that stuff you do to fix what’s going on. Not 100%, but that’s kinda the what the route is next,” Thomas said.

His offensive production has suffered significantly during this injury-plagued season.
Thomas is hitting .160/.246/.272 with four home runs and 11 RBIs, marking a steep decline from previous campaigns.
The persistent nature of plantar fasciitis has made consistent play impossible.
Manager Stephen Vogt acknowledged the difficulty of Thomas’ situation. “He just couldn’t ever get healthy. I feel for him,” Vogt said.
With less than two weeks remaining in the regular season, a return appears unlikely even if Cleveland advances deep into October.
Surgery would require approximately three months of recovery, effectively ending his year but offering hope for 2026.
Thomas has consulted other players who faced similar injuries, highlighting how common this issue has become across baseball.
As he approaches free agency, the coming months will prove crucial for both his career trajectory and Cleveland’s offseason planning.
