The Cleveland Guardians have allowed a grand total of zero runs over the past couple of games.
They’ve always been a good defensive team, but the starting pitching hasn’t always been on point.
That’s why Kyle Manzardo wanted to tip his hat to the team’s hurlers.
When asked about the reasons behind this recent surge and strong stretch, the young first baseman tipped his hat to the pitchers:
“It boils down to the pitching. The last two games, really. Just applying pressure, they’re attacking the zone with really, really good stuff. They’re getting us back into the dugout quick, quick innings, which means we have more time to try and hit. We’re pitching it really well,” Manzardo said.
Logan Allen threw six scoreless frames and dominated the Milwaukee Brewers to take his record to 2-2 with a 3.70 ERA.
It was an encouraging outing after watching him battle through just four innings in his last start.
He helped the team hold onto a 1-0 lead with six strikeouts, three hits allowed, and one walk in 89 pitches.
He retired 13 straight hitters after a lead-off hit by Jackson Chourio in the first inning.
Then, the bullpen took over, with relievers Matt Festa, Hunter Gaddis, and Emmanuel Clase picking up things where he left them to complete a three-hit shutout.
Clase looked like his former self and retired three hitters in order to land his ninth save in 11 chances this season.
The Guardians entered the season boasting arguably the best bullpen in the entire Majors.
It will be crucial to get some steady production from the starters and keep them out there for at least six innings, not to overwork them, and to keep them fresh for when it matters most.
And while they won’t shut down their opposition night in and night out, they do have the potential to be this good from now on.
