Jose Ramirez is going through his latest spring training with the Cleveland Guardians, and there are going to be many more in his future. The All-Star third baseman wouldn’t have it any other way.
This offseason, the 33-year-old received a seven-year contract extension that should allow him to finish his career with the Guardians. He would then likely head to the Baseball Hall of Fame as one of the rare inductees who have played for just one franchise.
Ramirez recently opened up about his long-term Guardians tenure and called it “such a joy.”
“For me, it’s such a joy to be able to call Cleveland my forever home and be able to somehow freeze my career there. I’m really happy that we’re able to accomplish that,” Ramirez said.
There may have been some doubt about both sides being able to pull this off. Following the 2025 season, Ramirez said he was upset that the Guardians did not use the hometown discount he gave them on his previous contract extension to surround him with more talent.
However, those feelings must have passed quickly, as he signed another below-market deal to remain with the team, which hopefully will spend a little more money than they have been trying to get Ramirez and the franchise the long-sought World Series championship that they covet.
Ramirez figures to be the Guardians’ best player for a while into the future. He is coming off back-to-back 30-30 seasons and could become the only player other than Barry Bonds to reach that mark in three straight years. In addition, he is projected to make the AL All-Star team for an eighth time, and he has been one of the top vote-getters for AL MVP, though he has never won the award.
Based on his consistency and high level of play, it would be easy for the Guardians and their fans to take Ramirez for granted. But that has never seemed to be the case.
It must make them feel good to know that he does not take their relationship for granted, either, and that he is very much looking forward to what it will bring in the years to come.
