When a player has been around as long and has done as much as Jose Ramirez has over the course of his 14 MLB seasons, it should come as no surprise that some history will be made along the way. Most recently, the Cleveland Guardians’ third baseman accomplished something that hadn’t been done in almost 120 years.
With a home run on Thursday against the Baltimore Orioles, Ramirez now has four homers and four doubles this season. He also has eight stolen bases, and doing such things at 33 years old has put him in some rare company.
According to Luke Potosky, Ramirez continues to make unique MLB history, this time reaching a standard set by original Hall of Fame member Honus Wagner.
“Jose Ramirez has eight extra-base hits and eight stolen bases thru CLE’s first 20 games this season. The only other MLB player aged 33-or-older with 8+ XBH AND 8+ SB thru the first 20 team games of a season: Honus Wagner (1907; 8 XBH, 13 SB),” Potosky wrote on X.

If fans are unfamiliar with Wagner, who last played in 1917, consider this. In establishing the first class of inductees for the Baseball Hall of Fame, the Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop got the same number of votes as Babe Ruth.
Ramirez is already likely to join them in the Hall someday, but for now, he will continue to add to his long list of achievements. This week, Ramirez set the Cleveland franchise record for career at-bats, and he moved up the all-time list for home runs by a switch-hitter. Earlier this season, he broke the Cleveland record for games played that had stood for more than 100 years.
He has also climbed the franchise list for career doubles, and he is on track to become just the ninth player in MLB history to reach 300 career home runs and 300 stolen bases. Ramirez is also trying to become only the second player to have three 30-30 seasons in a row.
What makes all of these feats even more meaningful is that they have come with the same franchise. Now, with a contract extension that should keep Ramirez with the Guardians for the rest of his career, that may never change.
Ramirez was always a player who deserved more attention, but this season has become even more noteworthy as he makes history almost daily.
