Help might be on the way for the Cleveland Guardians.
They could certainly use a bit of an offensive punch.
That’s why getting All-Star designated hitter David Fry back at the plate soon will be so crucial to their success.
Fry has spent plenty of time on the shelf after having surgery on his elbow.
He’s been hitting off a tee, working in the weight room, doing some front toss, and recently started taking batting practice.
Fortunately, he hasn’t had any setbacks in his recovery and reportedly felt good in a rehab start for Double-A Akron.
However, according to Joe Noga of Cleveland.com, Fry won’t commit to any return date.
“As far as a timetable goes, Fry said he knows he is with Akron this week, playing every other day, and then after that, as cliche as it sounds, he is taking things one day at a time. In the meantime, Fry said he continues to work on throwing, even though he will not be playing defense this season. He is throwing weighted balls now and in the coming weeks he will begin throwing baseballs,” Noga wrote.
Fry was called out on strikes during his first at-bat at his rehab start.
He later had a base hit to center field before flying out in his third at-bat and logging a sacrifice fly in his final plate appearance.
He’s also moved on to live BP sessions against recovering Guardians pitchers Trevor Stephan and Shane Bieber, and the results reportedly have been encouraging.
The Guardians are doing the right thing by being cautious with their star slugger, and though they certainly need him back, they also need to think about the big picture and the long run.
