The Cleveland Guardians have several young players who can contribute for years to come.
They have a bit of a logjam in the middle of the infield, with several promising players.
Notably, that includes Gabriel Arias.
The Venezuelan infielder has been pretty good of late, especially with runners in scoring position and in key moments.
That’s why team insider Paul Hoynes believes he could be a legitimate candidate to start at shortstop next season, provided he proves that he can be more consistent:
“I think he’s earned [the starting shortstop role], but it’s a long way between now and opening day 2026. A lot can happen. Consistency is the key to a successful career in the big leagues. Until this season, we haven’t seen that out of Arias. That’s a question that hasn’t been answered. That being said, I think he’s benefitted from knowing he’s the regular shortstop. He’s always played good defense, and his hitting has improved as well,” Hoynes wrote.
The Guardians have a good problem on their hands.
No. 1 prospect and former No. 1 pick Travis Bazzana was also expected to be called up at some point this season, but an injury that sidelined him for nearly two months threw a wrench in those plans.
Then again, he’s going to be one of their most prominent prospects again next season, and even if he starts the season at Triple-A Columbus, he might be the first candidate to be called up.
That would give them yet another option in the middle of the infield, thus making it difficult for everybody to get consistent playing time.
As such, Arias might even be a candidate to be traded more than a candidate to start at shortstop.
Still, just like Hoynes wrote, a lot can change and happen from now until the opening day of next season.
If anything, it’s always good to have options, even if that means trying to get creative to figure out how to get everybody on the field.
