The Cleveland Guardians entered the 2025 season with sky-high expectations built around their promising young core.
The organization had invested heavily in homegrown talent, believing their depth and youth movement would propel them toward sustained success.
However, reality has delivered a harsh wake-up call that has left fans and analysts questioning everything.
At 46-49 and ranked 26th in runs scored, the Guardians find themselves facing an identity crisis.
Analyst Terry Pluto recently delivered a blunt and honest evaluation of the group, spotlighting the harsh realities facing Cleveland’s young hitters.
“The Guardians don’t excel in any area. What hurt Cleveland is they gave young players such as Bo Naylor, Jhonkensy Noel, Brayan Rocchio and even Gabriel Arias extended at-bats. None of them produced. They wanted to create ‘opportunities for young players,’ as team president Chris Antonetti explained early in the season. The team did that, but none of them took advantage of it. I think Angel Martinez, Nolan Jones and Kyle Manzardo have shown signs of being productive, but that is it when it comes to the young players,” Pluto wrote in his recent assessment.
Bo Naylor has struggled mightily at the plate with a .173 average and .273 OBP, while both Noel (.146) and Rocchio (.165) have found consistent success elusive.
Arias, despite his defensive versatility, is hitting just .231 and has accumulated 88 strikeouts in 255 at-bats.
With such underwhelming production from their young core, José Ramírez and Steven Kwan have been forced to carry the offensive burden almost single-handedly.
The lack of depth has exposed the team’s vulnerability and raised questions about their development strategy.
Still, some bright spots exist. Angel Martinez has begun showing more reliable plate discipline and clutch hitting ability.
Kyle Manzardo leads the club with 15 home runs, while Nolan Jones has quietly contributed with a .305 OBP and solid right field defense.
As the trade deadline approaches, the Guardians face a crucial decision about their direction.
They must choose between continuing to develop their struggling young talent or seeking external reinforcements to salvage their playoff hopes.
