The Cleveland Guardians entered the season with optimism, but as the All-Star break approaches, a harsh reality has set in.
Their offense ranks among baseball’s worst, transforming what appeared to be a promising campaign into a struggle for relevance.
The Guardians held a six-game cushion over .500 and controlled their Wild Card destiny just weeks ago.
However, a devastating stretch has sent them spiraling toward mediocrity.
The offensive struggles have become impossible to ignore, pushing the team toward the bottom of league rankings and making the upcoming trade deadline a potential turning point for the franchise.
“The Guardians are 26th in runs scored. They need offense. Perhaps CJ Kayfus and Chase DeLauter are promoted from Class AAA and can add some punch to the lineup. Maybe they trade for someone, as they did for Lane Thomas a year ago. It’s possible Kyle Manzardo gets hot. He’s second on the team with 15 homers. It won’t be one or two guys; several have to join Ramírez and Steven Kwan as legitimate hitters in the lineup,” analyst Terry Pluto wrote in his latest column.
José Ramírez (.297) and Steven Kwan (.298) continue shouldering the offensive load, but the supporting cast has crumbled around them.
Kyle Manzardo’s 15 home runs provide power but his .217 average creates lineup holes.
Lane Thomas, acquired in last year’s trade deadline move, is hitting just .160 and currently sidelined with injury.
The struggles extend throughout the roster. Bo Naylor (.173), Carlos Santana (.235), and Daniel Schneemann (.213) have failed to find any meaningful consistency.
The team has been shut out five times in their last nine games, highlighting the severity of their offensive woes.
Manager Stephen Vogt remains optimistic about internal solutions, but the front office faces critical decisions.
Whether they promote from within or pursue external additions, the urgency to act grows stronger each day as playoff hopes hang in the balance.
