The Cleveland Guardians don’t usually make big splashes in free agency. Fans, however, have gotten used to that reality. They know and understand that’s how they operate, even though they may not agree with it.
The Guardians like to build from within. They like to draft well and develop their own talent, and there’s nothing wrong with that as long as it’s done correctly.
The Guardians, however, have a golden chance to do something special this year. Even though Jose Ramirez, Angel Martinez, and Chase DeLauter are injured, they will return around the All-Star break, at least the first two.
When they are healthy, they are the backbone of the offense. But let’s not forget this team has rookie Travis Bazzana, who is looking like a perennial All-Star already, and Kyle Manzardo, a surging slugger who already hit 27 homers last year. Brayan Rocchio is breaking out, and Daniel Schneemann appears to be catching fire again.
In addition to these talented young hitters, they also boast an excellent pitching staff from top to bottom. Guys like Gavin Williams, Parker Messick, and Tanner Bibee can lead a rotation, and Cade Smith is arguably the best reliever in the American League.
If the Guardians could add at least one difference-maker in the lineup and a couple of pitchers via trade, they could become one of the teams to beat in the junior circuit. Will they be aggressive enough come the deadline, though? Cleveland.com’s Joe Noga doesn’t believe they will.
“I really wish they would go out and make a big splash—trade a top prospect, bring in a bat. It’s just not in the character of this front office. They’re gonna rely on guys within the system. I don’t think they’re gonna look outside right away. Maybe as they get closer to the trade deadline, a minor deal might pop up, but it might be one of those thread-the-needle kind where they don’t mortgage the future for the present,” Noga said.

Noga is, unfortunately, right: the team is unlikely to sacrifice part of the future for a win-now piece, at least not a star-caliber player. That doesn’t mean it’s impossible, though.
If Cleveland shows the hunger they had in that 2016-18 period and brings in a big piece or two, they could become World Series candidates once Ramirez, Martinez, and DeLauter rejoin the lineup. That’s a big “if”, though.
Imagine what Yordan Alvarez or Mike Trout would do in the middle of the Guardians’ lineup. Those two are highly unlikely trade targets, but you get the point.
The pitching might be good enough to support a World Series run as it is, even though it clearly needs a depth arm or two for the rotation, and a top reliever. The offense, however, needs a big bat, a potent run producer to get Cleveland over the bump.
