The Cleveland Guardians fell in the American League Wild Card series in three games to the Detroit Tigers this week, which was an ironic end to the season after overcoming a 15.5-game deficit in the AL Central to swipe the division away from Detroit in the season’s final days.
It was a fun run, but the reason for the team’s undoing was obvious to one insider who revealed the team’s “fatal flaw” in the series.
Cleveland.com’s Paul Hoynes shared during a recent episode of the Cleveland Baseball Talk Podcast that the Guardians looked tired in the series.
“They look gassed to me. They looked tired,” veteran Cleveland.com reporter Paul Hoynes observed during the latest Cleveland Baseball Talk Podcast, diagnosing the fatal flaw that doomed the Guardians in their 6-3 loss to the Tigers. What had been one of the team’s greatest strengths throughout their miraculous comeback from a 15 1/2-game deficit became their undoing at the worst possible moment.
It’s a unique take that could be possible since the team was essentially playing playoff games throughout the season’s final two months after digging a 15.5-game deficit in the AL Central.
Cleveland’s bullpen looked like it ran out of steam while the offense fell flat and scored just one run before being gifted a pair from a late error, so there’s certainly some validity to Hoynes’ claim.
While this could explain the loss, the reality is that this team once again failed to field a competitive offense in 2025, and the lack of thump showed up for a second consecutive postseason.
This team can’t compete without adding more firepower at the plate this offseason, and if the front office once again fails to do so, it’s a clear sign that they aren’t serious about winning a World Series.
