The Cleveland Guardians desperately need some answers on offense.
Fortunately, help might be on the way.
The Guardians recently announced that prospect Juan Brito is taking big steps to get back on the field after an injury.
The young infielder will begin a rehab assignment in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League, according to Joe Noga of Cleveland.com.
“Brito is making progress after undergoing surgery to repair the collateral ligament in his right thumb six weeks ago. The club’s No. 10 prospect is set to begin working toward returning to game activity later this week in the Arizona Complex League,” Noga wrote.
The Guardians placed him on the seven-day injured list with the injury he sustained while at Triple-A Columbus a little over a month ago.
He will rejoin Columbus after he clears some hurdles in his recovery process and gets his legs back under him.
Brito was a strong candidate to be the Guardians’ starting second baseman and was on a roll in the minors before this setback.
He was slashing .291/.406/.491 with five doubles, four stolen bases and two home runs in 16 games.
The Guardians acquired him in 2022 when they traded Nolan Jones to the Colorado Rockies, and he’s grown to become one of the highest-ranked prospects in their farm system.
Angel Martinez is struggling mightily at the plate, and Brito is great at making contact and getting on base, and he might be a strong candidate to take Martinez’s spot once he’s cleared to return to action.
