The Cleveland Guardians are desperately in need of some good news after another unexemplary series against the Toronto Blue Jays, where the team lost two out of three, culminating in the offense being shut out for the fourth time this month to drop the team to 40-39.
As bad as the offense has been, it would also be helpful to have Shane Bieber back to bolster the rotation and reenergize the entire organization.
Cleveland.com’s Paul Hoynes shared on Friday that Bieber was scheduled for another bullpen session in the next step in his return from Tommy John surgery.
“Shane Bieber will throw a bullpen session on Friday as he continues to recover from last year’s Tommy John surgery on his right elbow,” Hoynes wrote.
Bieber reportedly threw a 20-pitch bullpen session on Tuesday and felt fine afterwards, which was a great sign following his recent scare.
Bieber was shut down for a week earlier in the month after making a rehab start because his elbow was sore, but thankfully, it was just regular soreness and not something fans need to be overly worried about.
The rotation has been relatively steady of late, with Gavin Williams, Tanner Bibee, and Slade Cecconi delivering just about every time they take the bump.
Luis Ortiz’s control has been an issue, but his ERA is also well under 4.00 since his first start of the year, when he gave up seven runs.
Bieber should be on track to make another rehab start soon, and he is progressing in the right direction to take his usual place atop this rotation sometime in the second half.
We’ll see if the offense can turn things around by then and convince this front office not to become sellers at the trade deadline.
