The Cleveland Guardians haven’t done much of anything this offseason, as the front office is likely counting on big improvements from a few prospects who are slated to crack the Opening Day roster. The pressure is real following consecutive AL Central crowns, but these kids have shown to be up to the challenge thus far.
Of the prospects with the most pressure on them, none carries the expectations that former No. 1 overall pick Travis Bazzana does. Cleveland’s infield is currently crowded, but this franchise will surely find room to accommodate Bazzana whenever he is ready to debut, which could be sometime in 2026, although one insider still has concerns about him.
In a recent article for Cleveland.com, Joe Noga touched on the tremendous hype that the 2024 No. 1 pick has. The question he has about him is more in regard to his timeline compared to the Guardians’, as he isn’t sure the team is in a position to let him go through his necessary ups and downs that come with being a rookie.
“And that’s sort of the problem with Bazzana. The Guardians are never really fully into a rebuild and never writing off a season where they can bring up a prospect and let him just play, sink or swim, regardless of what the results are. The Guardians are always competing for a division or a spot in the postseason,” explained Noga.
Bazzana still has just 111 games in the minors since being drafted, but he made it to Triple-A last season and didn’t look overwhelmed. He posted an .858 OPS in 26 games with an impressive 29 walks.
He’ll likely start the season in Triple-A once again as the Guardians continue to roll with Brayan Rocchio, Gabriel Arias, and potentially Juan Brito in the middle infield mix. However, none of them possess the offensive upside of Bazzana, and it’s only a matter of time before he becomes this team’s permanent second baseman.
Noga’s point makes sense, as it’s tough to justify having a rookie take their lumps while the team is contending for division crowns, but when you look at how repugnant this offense was in 2025, is it even that much of a risk? It’s hard to believe that even if Bazzana and other youngsters like Chase DeLauter and George Valera struggle a bit, they can’t outproduce what the team had at those respective positions last season.
