Velazquez, who was recently promoted to Double-A Akron, picked up right where he left off at High-A Lake County.
The first baseman was just named Eastern League Player of the Week.
That’s a well-deserved honor after going 12-for-22 (.545) with nine runs scored, four home runs, seven RBIs, four doubles and one triple in five games against Reading.
He got on base in each of those games and had four multihit games in a row, including three straight games with three hits.
Notably, he’s one of just three Akron players to earn the honor this season, joining Jorge Burgos and recently called-up C.J. Kayfus.
That’s a great omen for a player who’s making a strong case for starting next season at Triple-A Columbus.
The Guardians selected Velazquez in the first round of the 2023 MLB Draft.
This season at Lake County and Akron, he’s hitting .262 with 21 home runs (which is the most in the Guardians’ farm system), 24 doubles, seven triples and 70 RBIs in 99 games played.
He’s got a long way to go to get to the majors, but he’s definitely heading in the right direction.
