The Cleveland Guardians aren’t likely to make big moves at the trade deadline.
If anything, they might not make any move at all.
However, they could still get a prime reinforcement.
C.J. Kayfus has been a force to be reckoned with at Triple-A Columbus this season.
And while he isn’t he team’s most-hyped prospect, he’s certainly been the most consistent.
So, with Chase DeLauter dealing with yet another injury, Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report believes that Kayfus might now get his spot and be the first big-time prospect to be called up this season:
“With the oft-injured Chase DeLauter battling a wrist injury, it’s starting to look more and more like Kayfus might beat him to the majors as the Guardians continue to search for outfield production. Kayfus, 23, is hitting .307/.399/.557 with 15 doubles, 13 home runs and 51 RBI in 76 games between Double-A and Triple-A, and he checked in at No. 70 on B/R’s latest Top 100 prospect list,” Reuter wrote.
Of course, expecting a rookie to be so impactful that he’s going to save the team’s season isn’t realistic or even fair to him.
Then again, Kayfus has looked like a man among children this season, and he’s most definitely earned the right to show what he’s got in the majors.
The team needs some firepower in the outfield, and Kayfus can be the type of offensive catalyst that Stephen Vogt has needed so much this season.
Travis Bazzana and Chase DeLauter seemed to be ahead of him in the pecking order, and most fans and analysts expected to see both of them take the field at some point this season, but injuries had other plans.
Even if he struggles early on, Kayfus could certainly benefit from an extended run against high-end competition.
He looks like someone who’s already outgrown Triple-A, and he might just be wasting his time at Columbus at this point.
