The Cleveland Guardians’ farm system is the gift that just keeps on giving. They have one of the most proficient farm systems in the game, and Angel Genao is just another proof of that.
The 21-year-old switch-hitting shortstop has been on a tear this season. As shown by Guardians Prospective on X, he currently has the fifth-highest batting average in the Dominican Republic’s winter league (.338).

The Guardians’ decision to protect him from the Rule 5 draft was far from surprising. If anything, it was what they needed to do with their No. 3 prospect, who also happens to be the No. 59 prospect in all of baseball, according to MLB Pipeline.
The young shortstop spent most of his time with the Double-A Akron Rubberducks last season. He posted a slash line of .259/.323/.359 to go along with 37 RBIs, 17 doubles, and four triples in 77 games.
His rare combination of good pop, ability to get on base, contact, and power makes him a special prospect, especially as a switch-hitter. Also, he can cover multiple positions if needed.
The Guardians will most likely continue to play him at shortstop, knowing that Jose Ramirez will remain their starting third baseman for years to come and that former No. 1 pick Travis Bazzana will handle second base at some point in the future. Genao is just getting started, and he still has to earn his spot, but barring a shocking turn of events or a big injury, he should make his MLB debut next summer.
